Y5 Thornbridge Residential 2010

At the end of February and beginning of March 2010 some of our Year 5 children took off to Thornbridge

See pictures below from some of the activities and read our comments...

Friday 26th February - Setting off!

James Sheedy

At 2 o’clock we got on the minny bus to go to Thornbridge.  When we got there we found out what rooms we were in.  After that we came in and had tea at the dinner table before we went on the climbing wall.

Friday 26th February - Arriving at Thornbridge

William Roberts

Dear Diary,

The minute I walkled into Thornbridge Hall it was a terrific sight.  As me and my other friends walked up the annoying stairs to the house it was a nuisance, but we managed and got to the entrance.  Jack T’s shoulder was aching so he put his bag on top of mine while he waited for Mr Wright to open the door in the wet damp rain.

Mr Wright told us to get our slippers on.  Then he showed us how to make our bed before telling us the rules.  We picked partners and I did it with Jack Wilson.  We were given a pillow cover, a quilt cover and a sheet.  I went first because I was on the top bunk (and Mr Wright said it had to be done first).  Then we did JW’s bed!  Mrs Wise came and showed us a magic way to do the duvet and said Mr Wrights way was rubbish!

Friday - Climbing Wall

Ross Ellis

After we had tea we went rock climbing and played loads of games.  One of them was where you had to hold onto the rock climbing bricks for as long as you could.  Will, Jake, Charlotte and Lauren were the best in our group.

Saturday Morning

Lauren Nicholson Fowler

Today I am really looking forward to going down the mine and going on the sky ropes.  I don’t know how it looks or anything but I’m getting really excited and I think its going to be a lot of fun! I absolutely cannot wait!

Saturday 27th February - Ashford Black Marble Mine

Charlotte Bates

Today we are going to the mine first.  I’m so excited, I don’t know what its going to be like.  Then we are going to the high ropes but I’m a bit scared of heights, but I’m sure I’ll be fine.  The mine will still be a bit scary but it will be fun.

Saturday - Ashford Black Marble Mine

Jack Turner

Miss Crabtree arrived today and then we got dressed.  Our first activity was the Ashford Black Marble Mine which was a long walk to get there and a long walk inside, our instructor was called Phil.  Inside, after a long walk, Phil told us to turn off the torches on our helmets!  It was dark and I felt excited.  He gave us a candle and told us to count to 20, and then try to find him with the candle light by just turning left, we found him after about 10 minutes.  Jack Wilson was leading us and he thought we had gone the wrong way!  So we all turned back but Mr Wright thankfully, told us which way to go!  We found Phil and he showed us a stalegtite.  We had left Miss Crabtree in the dark and we used our candlelight to find her.  We walked out of the mine and back to Thornbridge.

Saturday - Skyropes

Joe Bramley

I was the first to get picked to climb up the ladder it was extremely nerve racking but I made it up. Then Joe (the instructor) put a special kind of harness on me so I would

not fall off. Then I waited till 6 people were at the top.

Then it happened! I slipped off and I actually went round and when I came back, everyone was cheering me on.

First I had to face a line with a rope on it to hold onto. After that was a bridge type of thing that you had to cross.

Next it was pretty much the same but you had ropes hanging. After that there was the jump where you had to jump from one board to another. Next was a line where you had to hold on to a barrel full of water. Then the final one was just about the exact same as the first one. I was the first one to go and I went round 7 times.

Saturday - Sky Ropes

Devrim Sacmacioglu

I went on to the sky ropes and was a bit scared but when I got to the top I was more confident.  You had to get strapped in by a harness and a helmet.  When I got on the platform it looked really far down.  I went around at least 16 times.  The best bit was the barrel bit because it was really funny when you had to hold on by the gap in the barrel.  I got better at not falling off.

Saturday - Activities

Megan Sharkey

2.10pm

It was a long walk to Ashford Black Marble Mine.  When we finally arrived we were all tired.  We went inside and looked around for a bit.  Did you know that some miners started work at the age of ten?  Then we went into the 5 way junction and turned off our headlights.  It was very scary.  Then we lit some candles and walked around in a loop.  Then we came back out and came back to Thornbridge.

After lunch we went to the Skyropes.  It was very high up and when I looked up I felt petrified but after a while Mrs Parker and Miss Crabtree helped me and I went up.  I was a bit shaky at first but I got used to it and I went right to the top.  I was terrified when I started going up!  When I was at the top I was fine.  Then I came back down and Joe (the instructor) kept stopping suddenly when I was in my harness and I kept bouncing up and down.

Saturday - Activities

Joshua

Now the high ropes and mine to go first.  We went on the high rope at first we were petrified but I did it.  My favourite bit was at the end because I could pull myself across then you go down slowly.  I did a superman pose coming down.   Now the mine it was amazing but a big mess because there was a lot of puddles.  One puddle was enormous it nearly came over my wellies.  I liked using the map.  Now back to the hut for tea.

Saturday - Activities

Callum Bell

The next day we went on the high ropes.  I was terrified up on the wooden platform. Before we went up we put on our harness by ourselves.  Up on the platform it was all right at first, then I went around the course on my harness it was OK.  After lunch me and my group went down to the mine in the woods, we had to wear a helmet with a light on top of it.  After tea we went into the woods near camp and all of us did the rope walk in the pitch black woods.  Meanwhile I was terrified going through the three tyres where it was muddy.

Saturday - Night Walk

Jack Wilson

I think the night walk that we will be going on will be scary because you can walk into things.  It was scary at first but you can get used to it.  You had to wear blacked out goggles and hold onto a rope.  Its better when you get to the end.  After I had finished I was proud of myself.

Saturday Evening - Night Walk

Tom Stanley

Tonight I’m going to walk blindfolded.  On the night walk it was damp, muddy and very scary.  When I finished I was very happy because I thought it was going to be a lot longer.  Then we went back and had hot chocolate and a cake, it was nice.
