Family Innovation Challenge - Create a Robot

Thank you for all of the amazing designs and models we have received so far for our innovation family project. I have loved hearing about the different robots from lots of children who have brought them to me this week.

If you missed this event and activity due to a busy half term full of exciting events we have decided to extend the challenge until the end of the first week back after the Easter holidays so that more families can be involved.

Last year we had over 100 families participate in our British Science week family challenge and we would love to see just as many this year.

The challenge is to design a robot for the future as this years British Science Week theme was ‘Innovation’.

We are setting a challenge to create a model of a robot that could change and improve something we do every day or even the world. This could be a robot that helps you clean the house, picks up litter or builds eco-friendly houses. It’s your robot so it is your choice! Be CREATIVE! We know that you will be able to create some amazing drawings and models and we can’t wait to see them. We would love to hear all about what your robot does and the impact it could have on everyday life. You can do this again really creatively through a poster, a video or even a letter.

Final submission date is now will be April 22nd with the winner being announced on the 23rd.

All entrants will be put into a raffle to win some fantastic science goodies which are kindly being funded by our wonderful FROGS.

Small World Cinema

MakerFutures at The University of Sheffield has joined up with the Small World Cinema in London to celebrate the best of children’s cinema.

Children and their families are warmly invited to ‘From Europe With Love’, a free two-day film festival (27/28 March) celebrating children’s stories and films from all over the continent. There will be live and pre-recorded workshops, films, tutorials, shadow doodling, gif-making, bake-alongs and storytelling.

It will be a fun and enjoyable way for families to spend a lockdown weekend, and we hope it gives people a chance to experience something new and different.

Apply now for a MegaTravel Pass for your child

Cheaper travel is available for all under 16s living in South Yorkshire with a MegaTravel Pass. MegaTravellers can travel in South Yorkshire for a single fare of 80p per journey on buses or trams. They can also buy discounted 1, 7 or 28 day tickets, which are loaded onto the pass, which might be cheaper if they travel regularly. Under 16s travelling without a valid pass may be charged full fare, so even if your pupils are not travelling on public transport right now, we’re encouraging early application so they’re ready to go in September. The pass proves a child is eligible to travel for the concessionary fare on public transport in South Yorkshire.

Instructions on how to apply for a MegaTravel Pass are available at https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/megatravel
