The curriculum at Greenhill is everything taught in our school both directly and indirectly, it reflects the entire experience of a child in our school. Our aim is that our children become thoughtful and reflective learners that develop a passion for acquiring and using knowledge. Our aim is to create confident and resilient individuals who can grow into responsible citizens. We hope that our developing curriculum will enable this for all.
Our curriculum is being designed in order to provide an education that is broad, balanced and relevant for the world in which the children live. Ensuring that it is coherently planned, working towards clear end points in each subject, which will allow progression year on year giving opportunities for children to achieve a depth of understanding in key curriculum concepts. At Greenhill we believe that the curriculum must be relevant to today’s society and have clear links with the wider culture and diversity in an increasingly global community.
Our curriculum uses high quality texts to develop a passion for reading, ensuring that this sits at the heart of our curriculum. We are developing a vocabulary rich curriculum that encourages the development of Oracy skills and provides opportunities for children to share and challenge opinions in an appropriate way. In writing we adopt a ‘Novel Study’ approach, engaging children in a wide variety of challenging and stimulating texts. This, along with mathematics is taught discretely with grammar being integrated into the literacy planning. Foundation subjects are taught as part of a wider theme/topic approach, whilst ensuring that the children have clarity on the specific subject being taught. Learning is planned so that key themes and concepts are revisited regularly to secure deeper understanding.
Over the course of the academic year 2019/20 the staff team at Greenhill will be working to develop the curriculum to ensure it accurately meets the needs of our learning community. The staff at Greenhill are active in this learning process and will use research and collaborations with education partners to help refine and shape curriculum planning to ensure it is the best it can be for our pupils.
