Curriculum

Curriculum Statement

The curriculum at Greenhill is everything taught in our school both directly and indirectly, it reflects the entire experience of a child in our school. Our aim is that our children become thoughtful and reflective learners that develop a passion for acquiring and using knowledge. Our aim is to create confident and resilient individuals who can grow into responsible citizens. We hope that our developing curriculum will enable this for all pupils.

Our curriculum is designed to provide an education that is broad, balanced and relevant for the world in which the children live. We ensure that all of our curriculum subjects meet the expectations of the National Curriculum and by ensuring that it is coherently planned, our curriculum builds towards clear end points in each subject. This allows for progression year on year and gives opportunities for children to achieve a depth of understanding in key curriculum concepts. At Greenhill, we believe that the curriculum must be relevant to today’s diverse society and have clear links with the wider culture in an increasingly global community.

We use Read Write Inc. as our phonic programme, starting our children as early as is appropriate to ensure they practice and acquire the key skills to become confident, active and enthusiastic readers.  We understand that reading is key in enabling all of our children to access the curriculum on offer and as such we place big emphasis on teaching our children this key skill. Throughout school, we use high quality texts to develop a passion for reading, ensuring that this sits at the heart of our curriculum. We are continually striving to develop a vocabulary rich curriculum that encourages the development of Oracy skills and provides opportunities for children to share and challenge opinions in an appropriate way. In writing we adopt a ‘Novel Study’ approach, engaging children in a wide variety of challenging and stimulating texts. This, along with mathematics is taught discretely with grammar being integrated into the literacy planning. Foundation subjects are taught independently, although links are made if appropriate. Care is taken to ensure that the children have clarity on the specific subject being taught and that prior knowledge and skills are built upon through careful sequencing of learning. Opportunities are planned for key themes and concepts to be revisited regularly to secure a deeper understanding.

At Greenhill, one of our big passions is the development of our curriculum offer and the staff team work hard to embed our curriculum approach across all subjects to ensure it accurately meets the needs of our learning community. The staff at Greenhill are active in this learning process and will use research and collaborations with education partners to help refine and shape curriculum planning to ensure it is the best it can be for our pupils.
